Are San Diego Mini Sessions Worth It? The Low-Stress Way to Finally Get Family Photos Done
If you have been thinking about booking a professional photo session but keep putting it off because of the time commitment, the cost, or just not knowing what to actually expect, mini sessions were made for you.
Here is an honest breakdown of what they are, what happens during one, and why they work especially well for families, couples, and anyone who has never done this before.
What Is a Mini Session?
A mini session is a 20-minute photography session at a pre-selected location. It is designed for people who want quality, polished photos without building their entire afternoon around a shoot.
The main differences between a mini session and a full session come down to time and location. A full session runs 60 minutes and gives you more flexibility on where we shoot and what we cover. A mini session is 20 minutes at a location I have already chosen and scouted.
For a lot of people, especially families with young kids, 20 minutes is actually the sweet spot.
The Location Is Already Figured Out
One of the first things people stress about when booking a photo session is where to do it. With mini sessions, that decision is already made.
I only shoot at locations I have been to before, places where I already know where the light falls, what the background looks like at different times of day, and which spots are worth using. For my upcoming summer mini sessions in San Diego, I will be shooting at Oceanside Pier and Scripps Pier. Both are beautiful coastal settings, and I know exactly what we are working with before you arrive.
You just show up. The rest is handled.
What the Session Actually Looks Like
When you arrive, we take a minute or two to just talk. If we have not worked together before, that small talk is not filler. It is the part that makes the photos look the way they do. People who are relaxed in front of a camera look completely different from people who are tense, and a two-minute conversation at the start of a session makes a real difference.
From there, I move us through a few spots I have already mapped out. The flow is intentional so we are not burning your 20 minutes figuring out where to stand next. I am capturing the shots I know will work while staying present enough to catch the real stuff that happens in between.
Near the end of the session, I ask if there are any specific shots you came in wanting. A certain pose, a particular grouping, something you had in mind before you arrived. We get those before we wrap. Then I give you a quick recap of when your gallery will be ready and how you will receive it.
That is the whole experience. No pressure, no rushing, no awkward silences while someone fidgets with a camera.
"Working with Derriel was the easiest thing ever. He was kind, patient and professional. Our kids were all over the place and somehow he managed to capture the most beautiful photos. Would highly recommend booking him for any family photos."
What You Receive
After your session, your gallery will include 20 to 30 images for you to review. From that gallery, you choose 10 photos that are included in your session fee. I give you options rather than just sending my personal favorites, because the photo that matters most to you and the one I would pick are not always the same image.
Your selected photos are delivered through a private online gallery, accessible from any device.
Who Mini Sessions Work Best For
Families with young kids. Twenty minutes is genuinely ideal when toddlers are involved. Kids tend to be at their best early in a session before the novelty wears off, and the pre-mapped flow means we are moving efficiently from the moment we start. I have worked with enough young children to know that the best photos almost always happen in the first half anyway.
"Derriel is our first choice when it comes to capturing our sweet family moments since having our little girl. He has an impeccable eye and has the ability to keep a shoot relaxed and comfortable. He is great with kids, our daughter loves Uncle D!"
Couples. A 20-minute session at the beach gives you more than enough time for photos that feel natural and unposed, without a half-day commitment.
First-timers. If you have never had professional photos taken and are not sure what the experience feels like, a mini session is the lowest-stakes way to find out. You get real, finished photos and a clear sense of what working together looks like before committing to a full session.
What to Wear
Wear what makes you feel like yourself. There is no dress code because the goal is for the photos to look like you, not like a catalog. Outfits that are comfortable and reflect your everyday style tend to produce the photos people actually hang on their walls.
The Types of Mini Sessions Available
Throughout the year, Derriel Almario Photography offers several different mini session formats. Summer beach minis are held at San Diego coastal locations like Oceanside Pier and Scripps Pier. Holiday and Christmas minis are great for family portraits and seasonal cards. Mommy and Me sessions around Mother's Day are designed specifically for mothers and their children.
Each session date is one day per location, so the number of spots is naturally limited.
How to Book
Booking is done through the website. You pick your date and time, fill out a short questionnaire so I can get to know you a little before we meet, and your spot is confirmed with payment. No back-and-forth emails. No uncertainty about what is included.
If you have been sitting on the idea of getting photos done, a mini session is the most straightforward way to make it happen. Twenty minutes, a location you do not have to research, and a photographer who already knows what the light looks like when you get there.
